HBA Mentoring Program

Vision: Our vision is to connect Greek and Greek-American mentors and mentees in the USA and Greece to provide guidance and career advice in the field of biomedical sciences.

Mission: Our mission is to build a strong, sustainable network where distinguished Greek or Greek-American scientists and entrepreneurs of the USA will mentor young Greek or Greek-American students and scientists in the field of biomedical sciences.

Program Description: The program is designed to help students and young scientists in Greece or the USA to find a mentor in the USA who could guide them and help them with important career decisions. The mentors of the program are established scientists in different biomedical fields or medical doctors, and they currently work in either the academia or industry. Potential mentees should be members of the HBA-USA and in training (undergraduate, graduate or postdoctoral students/fellows).

If you wish to become a mentee in this program, here are the necessary steps:

  • Become an HBA-USA member, if not already, following the instructions in this link.
  • Fill in the mentoring program application form, where you will need to provide personal information, including scientific interests as well as information about your education, work/research experience, publications, patents, conference presentations and posters. You will also need to submit a cover letter about why you need a mentor and how this mentor will support your career and personal development.
  • Briefly describe how a mentor could help your personal and career development.
  • Choose up to three mentors from the List of Mentors.

Your application will be send to the HBA-USA evaluation committee where two independent reviewers will evaluate it based on your background and mentorship needs. Applications will be reviewed every four months. If you qualify for the program, the HBA-USA evaluation committee will contact the first mentor from the list of mentors you selected and if not available will continue to the next one. If you match with a mentor, the HBA-USA evaluation committee will bring you in touch with the mentor through e-mail and it will be left up to the mentor and you to arrange how and when you will meet. HBA-USA proposes the use of skype and at least two meetings per year. At the end of each year both the mentor and the mentee will fill out an evaluation form for the program. If you have questions please contact us at administrator@hba-usa.org.
