Scholarship Program

The Hellenic Bioscientific Association in the USA (HBA-USA) is pleased to announce Scholarship Program, which supports outstanding young scientists of Hellenic ancestry. At least two scholarships up to $1,000 will be awarded annually to undergraduate, graduate or postdoctoral fellow enrolled in a US or Greek program. The scholarship supports attendance at U.S. or international scientific meetings, workshops, schools, or internships at US-based institutions. Through this program, HBA-USA aims to recognize and support emerging biomedical scientists and foster their engagement with the broader research community.

Applications will be considered in two cycles: (1) deadline May 1, (2) January 15, with decisions communicated by June 31 and March 15.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet all the following requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in a graduate program or be a postdoctoral research fellow in the biological/biomedical sciences or bioengineering in the US, Greece or Cyprus. Applicants enrolled in programs in Greece or Cyprus are eligible to request support only for conferences, workshops, or internships held in the US.
  2. Have submitted or have an accepted abstract for presentation at a scientific conference in the US (for conference travel) or have a letter of acceptance for an internship (for internship support).
  3. Be of Hellenic ancestry.
  4. Be a member of HBA-USA and have paid their membership dues (Membership payment link: https://hbausa.org/plans/).

Application Documents

Please submit the following materials to :

  1. Letter of interest (maximum 300 words) in English. Describe how participation in the conference, workshop, school, or internship will contribute to your scientific and professional development and explain your need for financial support.
  2. A 2-page long CV in English.
  3. Transcript – only for undergraduate and graduate students.
  4. Two letters of recommendation letters sent directly to with Applicant’s name on the subject line.
  5. For conference travel support, a copy of the submitted abstract, including the conference name, location, and acceptance status if applicable. For internships, a letter of acceptance is required.

The award recipient will be announced directly via email and will be shared on HBA-USA’s website. Applications will be considered in two cycles: (1) deadline May 1, (2) January 15, with decisions communicated by June 31 and March 15.

Selection Process

Applications will be evaluated by two HBA-USA Board of Directors Members and/or external Reviewers based on the following three criteria:

  1. Academic performance and scholarship as evidenced by awards, publications, presentations and transcript.
  2. The potential impact of the conference or internship on applicant’s career trajectory.
  3. Need of support based on letter of interest and recommendation letter.

Please note that for conference travel support, awardees must provide proof of abstract acceptance and proof of conference registration and attendance before receiving the monetary scholarship.
