Meet Dr. Konstantinos Karagiannis, PhD
The 2020-2022 HBA-USA Board of Directors will host Dr. Konstantinos Karagiannis, Lead Scientist of the HIVE Bioinformatics Group, United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the “Meet the Professional” event. The meeting will be focused on “Biomedical Career in Bioinformatics and Research Opportunities in FDA”. The participants will have the opportunity to ask Dr. Karagiannis questions about his career path and his journey from electrical engineering to biomedical science from Greece to the USA and FDA.
Dr. Konstantinos Karagiannis received his BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, his M.Sc. Biochemistry and Bioinformatics and Ph.D. in Genomics and Bioinformatics from the George Washington University studying RNA-virus quasispecies and developing novel NGS algorithms. He joined the Food and Drugs Administration in 2012 and co-developed the HIVE platform and numerous big data tools. In 2018 Dr. Karagiannis joined CRISPR Therapeutics as the Lead Bioinformatics Software Engineer where he modernized the research and development computational infrastructure and investigated the immune responses of the allogeneic CRISPR engineered CAR-T programs. Currently, he is leading the CBER’s bioinformatics group (HIVE) at the FDA and the chair of the center’s Genomics Working Group. His laboratory focuses on multiple fields of computational biology including but not limited to immune-informatics, transcriptomics, metagenomics, and single-cell -omics.
