HBA Scholarship program 2026 – 2nd Cycle (Secondary Award) – Vanesa Brecher

Vanesa Brecher is a second-year medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, pursuing her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree. She earned her B.S. in Neuroscience from the University of Maryland, where she conducted research focused on addiction neuroscience and the biological mechanisms underlying substance use. As a medical student, her research interests have expanded to cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgery, with a particular interest in clinical outcomes and translational research. She currently conducts cardiac surgery research at Lankenau Institute for Medical Research, where she is working to bridge her scientific training with her developing clinical perspective and ultimately translate research findings into improved patient care. In November, she will present two research projects at the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association Annual Meeting in Florida. Vanesa is very grateful to the HBA-USA organization, as this scholarship will support her attendance and presentation at the meeting as she continues developing as a future physician-scientist.
