Postdoctotral Postion, Research Foundation, Academy of Athens

A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Northwestern University to study the role of sirtuins in tumorigenesis. Highly inquisitive postgraduates with strong interest in cancer biology are invited to apply to the laboratory of Dr. Athanassios Vassilopoulos. The individual working in this position is expected to have training in cancer biology with proficiency in techniques involving molecular and cell biology, signal transduction, and mouse genetics. The Vassilopoulos lab is focused on the elucidation of cellular events involved in the mechanistic link between the process governing longevity and the development of cancers. Besides basic mechanistic studies, the lab is conducting translational research to develop novel targeted therapeutic strategies effective against specific types of breast cancer. The lab utilizes numerous techniques from molecular biology and in vitro cell work, to the generation and use of mouse models. The lab possesses state-of-the-art equipment and is housed in a new, open-lab design research building.

The successful applicant will have the unique opportunity to work on exciting projects that address fundamental questions of tumorigenesis. The postdoctoral fellow duties will include: organizing and implementing complex research plans, the development of new methods, testing and data collection, analysis and interpretation of data, writing detailed scientific reports and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.

The ideal candidate should have fewer than three (3) years postdoctoral experience and a strong publication record in the field of cancer biology. Previous work on breast cancer is preferred but not required. Applicants must have a PhD degree with a record of innovative scientific accomplishment in graduate and/or post-graduate studies, as evidenced by the applicant’s PhD thesis and/or by first authorships in peer-reviewed journals.

Northwestern University is one of the top-ranked universities in the country with a highly interactive scientific environment. The Feinberg School of Medicine is known for its pioneering research and is located in the heart of downtown Chicago. The Vassilopoulos laboratory is part of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and is supported by NCI/NIH. Salary and benefits will be competitive.
